Hey everyone, we're glad you are keeping up with our travels. Please feel free to post comments and suggestions along the way. Foto

I was finally able to get some pictures uploaded today! but I couldn't quite figure out how to format the post to where I could put a caption with each one. And they didn't add sequentially, so they are in no particular order. There are a few of us from the day we left, and one with our cousin Lissa in Los Angeles. Let's see....there's one from the night we visited the English class at Lake Ranau...a few from our hike around the lake....a street food stand and sample of the local fare, nasi goreng (fried rice)....one of the nicer bathrooms we've seen...an interesting worm we found while hiking...Kyle getting his picture taken with some locals on a train, this happened quite a bit in southern Sumatra, people just wanting to get their picture taken with a white person. One of the days on the Carita beach we were swarmed by a group and took pictures with them for a few minutes; this one lady even tried to hand her baby over to Kyle amid the chaos. Kyle refused, so hopefully they don't think the kid is cursed for life or anything. We are much further north in Sumatra now - in Bukitinggi at the moment - and the people here are much more used to foreigners so our celebrity status has plummeted. Enjoy the pictures and hopefully there will be more to come!

    Kyle, I see no one has stolen your watch. Ryan, Keeneland appreciates your advertising for them in Sumatra (hat).

    A couple items of interest:

    You are heading north into coffee country - Lake Toba and Lake Tawar. Lake Toba was the site, 75,000 years ago, of the largest volcano explosion on earth over the last 2 million years.

    I assume you've read about or remember the 2004 tsunami that hit Sumatra. The epicenter for the earthquake was off the NW Sumatra coast and created waves 50 - 100 ft high. Supposedly the tsunami destrouyed much of Banda Aceh and killed over 100,000 people in the region.

    If you're along the coast and feel the ground rumbling and see the water recede, look for a bus (with good tires) heading inland.
